Annual report of the Boston Water Board, for the year ending .. . y is the supply insufficient in quantity, but it is only byconstant and careful attention that it can be kept compara-tively pure, and it is certain to constantly deteriorate inquality. The surveys and investigations necessary for obtaining anadditional supply from the Shawshine river have been madeduring the year, and it is to be hoped that the requisiteauthority for the construction of the works may be obtainedfrom the present Legislature, in order that the works may becompleted as soon as possible. More work has been doneduring the past year, in improving the distribution system, than for several years past, both by relaying and cleaningthe old tuberculated pipes. This work should be continued, and I would recommend that at least $25,000 be expendedfor this purpose during the coming season. Appended to this report will be found the usual tables inregard to rainfall, consumption, yield of water-sheds, submitted, WILLIAM JACKSON, City Engineer and Engineer B. W.
