Itwas also favored for the reason that it is best suited to theRooke fare-collecting system, which has been in successfuluse on the lines of the Rhode Island Company for the pastfive years. This system was described in the ElectricRailway Journal for Dec. 30, 1911, as applied in Provi-dence, and consists essentially of a portable register car-ried by each conductor, each fare being passed through theregister as it is presented to the passenger. A register is. Mr. Arnold emphasized this point particularly in discussingthe advantages of platform collection car service with thepublic authorities, stating that persons unfamiliar with theadvance payment principle are apt to criticise it severelyon the score of slow loading, whereas an essential featureof prepayment car operation is the separation of passen-gers entering and leaving, thereby avoiding the interfer-ence which is the source of so great delay in the single-entrance type of car. Tests showed that with the presentnarrow platform the average time of loading per passen- assigned to a conductor in the morning and turned in eachnight or during the middle of the day in case the lay-offexceeds three hours.
