Aug,3,2012 - USA - DROUGHT - Ear of sweet corn shows Water Stress, fewer kernels per row, as the worst drought in more than 50 years intensifies.
Ear of Montauk sweet corn harvested in late July of 2012 in Western Pennsylvania shows signs of Water Stress, loss of kernels at the tip, as the worst drought in the United States during the last 50 years continues. The drought intensified in most American farm states as temperatures rose five to ten degrees above normal. According to the Agricultural Service half of the nation’s corn crop was rated as poor or very poor. One-third of the corn crop is used to feed livestock and fears of widespread crop damage has sent corn prices to record highs forcing livestock and Poultry producers to cut herds and production, which will lead to higher food prices. The ongoing drought along with and global economic problems raised fears of a worsened recession. Photo by Chuck Nacke
