Betty Friedan (1921-2006) American feminist. Her 1963 book 'The Feminine Mystique' was influential in American feminism in the 20th century. In 1966, Friedan co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW) and in 1970 organised the nationwide Women's Strike for Equality. She supported the Equal Rights Amendment and the repeal of abortion laws. She was regarded as an influential author and intellectual.
