Benjamin Bergmann, The White bicycle, Marktoberdorf Kunsthaus

The most outstanding works Benjamin Bergmann has produced since 2001, follow the tradition of creating dream worlds. They combine material collages of classical modernist style with elements of American environments. The artist works with ideal forms of antique architecture, as well as with opulent constructions of Hollywood films. At the same time, Bergmann’s objects always have an air of incompleteness. His roller-coaster, that looks as if it were going to collapse at any moment, complies with the intention of the artist who finds doubtful such concepts as eternity or perfection. Distinct traces of material treatment, almost theatrical design of technical details and functionality carried to the point of absurdity, compel one to interpret the artist’s sculptures as instruments of destructive world-perception. The probability of failure is raised here to the category of beauty. The instruments of Benjamin Bergmann reflect life as energetically charged and mysterious "Teatrum sacrum" ("Sacred theater"). Knowing and not knowing, mystery and cognition are regarded here as equals.
