Swinsty Cross near Egton Bridge where a plane crashed in April 1917 killing the pilot 19 year old Francis Holt Yates Titcomb
On 15th April 1917 Probationary F/O Francis Holt Yates Titcomb RNAS, aged 19, the pilot of a Maurice Farman Longhorn aircraft took off from Redcar for what was to be his first solo cross country flight. The aircraft crashed upside down at this site between Egton Bridge and Goathland. The pilot died and was buried with full military honours at Brompton Road Cemetery, London. In 1929 Mr John Kenneth Foster of Egton Manor arranged for this cross to be erected close to the crash site. It is inscribed "KF 1929".
