Dante 2 Volcano Robot
Dante 2 robot exploring the crater of Mount Spurr, an active volcano in Alaska, USA. This robot descended into Mount Spurr's crater in July 1994. It was designed to take samples of the gases released by fumaroles (vents). It also took water samples and recorded video images. On its ascent from the crater, it lost its footing and fell back to the crater floor. Despite sustaining damage, the mission was considered a success due to the quantity and quality of the data gathered. The Dante 2 mission also demonstrated the performance of a robot in a harsh environment, aiding the design of robots for use on other planets.
