Supernova remnant, X-ray image. This is SNR 0509, a Type 1a supernova, which results from the explosion of a white dwarf star in a binary system. It is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) approximately 160,000 light years from Earth. The lowest energy X-rays are red, intermediate energies are green and the highest energies are blue. Data from the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
