French Academy of Sciences. Scientists gathered in one of the collection rooms (cabinets) of the French Royal Academy of Sciences in the Louvre, Paris. This learned society, one of the earliest, was founded in 1666 under the patronage of the French King Louis XIV, and was located in the Louvre. This room includes scientific, engineering and astronomical equipment. This artwork, originally by French engraver Sebastien Le Clerc (1637-1714) and later published by Ernest Maindron (1838-1908), was published in the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
