RECTAL IRRIGATION Rectal irrigation is a valuable method of treatingcertain diseases of the rectum. The apparatus required consists of a funnel,rubber tubing, and rectal irrigator; the latter isa two-way tube of glass (Fig. 66) or metal, one. Method of Irrigating the Rectum.—Arrangethe patient in the Sims position, as for an enema. Connect the funnel, tubing, and irrigating nozzle;pour the prescribed solution into the funnel untilit runs out through the irrigator; pinch the tubingand insert the irrigator in the rectum as you woulda rectal tube; release the tubing and continue to 140 GYNECOLOGY FOR NURSES pour the solution into the funnel. After distend-ing the rectum the solution will run out throughthe free branch of the irrigator; continue flushinguntil it runs out clear. If it is desired to leave some solution in therectum, stop the free end of the irrigator and with-draw it carefully while the funnel is full. Colonic Irrigation.—This procedure is carriedout in the same manner as rectal irrigation througha colon tube and funnel, by alternately raisingand
