The Euphrates at Hillah, in its medium state, is 450feet wide and 7^ feet deep, with a velocity of 2^ milesan hour. It annually overflows its banks ; inundatingthe country for many miles around. The soil is veryfertile, and the air salubrious. EEECH is about 100 miles 8. e. of Babylon. It is nowcalled Irak. The most noted ruins found here arethe immense mounds. El Assayah, and the remains ofcoffins and bricks, scattered over a large district—in-dicating that it was a city of considerable size andimportance.
