Injury, recovery, and death, in relation to conductivity and permeability . ita-tively (as previously explained^^) in the following man-ner : The ends of the antagonism curve are connected bya straight line^^ and an ordinate is erected at the pointon the curve which is to be measured. For example, theends of the 30 minute curve in Fig. 71 are connected bythe dotted line. The antagonism at the point A (repre-senting a mixture in which the dissolved molecules NaCl and HCl) is expressed as AB-^BC. The rise in resistance at the end of 1 minute in pureHCl agrees with the results previously described.^^ See pages 122 to 129. This should in many cases be a curved line, provided the pure solu-tions are not equally toxic. But in the present case the curvature would besmall, and at the maximum point of the curve very small indeed. Thisline expresses the additive effect; , the effect which would be producedif there were no antagonism, and each component of the solution actedindependently. (See page 72). ^^ See page 48. ANTAGONISM 1G5 130 PER CENT 100. NaCiIOOHCi 0 Fig. 71.—AntagoniBm curve of Laminaria aaardhii in NaCl M, in HCI M, and inmixtures of these. The ordinateB represent net electrical resistance (expressed as per cent, ofthe normal net resistance); the abscissae represent the molecular proportions in the mix-tures. Thus NaCl 50, HCI 50 means a mixture of NaCl M and HCI M in suchproportions that 50% of the dissolved molecules is NaCl and 50% is HCI. Each curve repre-sentB a single experiment. Ail readings were taken at 18° C. or corrected to this temperature. A reading taken at the end of 18 hours showed that thetissue was dead in all the solutions. The plants can bekept alive much longer than this in mixtures of NaCl +CaCls; it is also noteworthy that the degree of antagon- 1G6 INJUEY, RECOVERY, AND DEATH ism, as shown by the electrical resistance, is greater inNaCl + CaClo than in NaCl + HCl.^* The hypothesis was further
