A black and white portrait of the film star Marlene Dietrich pictured in Los Angeles in 1939. She is smiling at the camera. Dietrich, Marlene (1901-1992) (born Maria Magdalene Dietrich von Losch) was a German-born US actress and singer. She became a star in Der Blaue Engel/The Blue Angel 1930, directed by Josef von Sternberg, with whom she would collaborate throughout the 1930s. Her films include Morocco 1930, Blonde Venus 1932, The Devil is a Woman 1935, Destry Rides Again 1939, and Touch of Evil 1958. In the 1960s she stopped acting and began a career as a concert singer. Opposed to the Nazi regime, she moved to Hollywood, becoming a US citizen 1937. Among her later films are Stagefright 1950 and Witness for the Prosecution 1957.
