Enterostomal therapist fitting a colostomy bag. A colostomy is where part of the colon (large intestine) is brought through an incision in the abdominal wall and formed into an external artificial anus called a stoma. This is then connected to a colostomy bag that collects faecal matter. A colostomy can be temporary or permanent, and is carried out when part of the colon or rectum has to be removed, often due to surgery to remove part of the bowel. Here, the therapist is affixing the bag to the backing pad.
