Aristomenes of Messene was a brave general and the most dangerous foe of the early Spartans. Once they captured him with fifty comrades and threw the prisoners into a deep pit. All were killed by the fall except Aristomenes, and he seemed sure to die of starvation, for there was no way of climbing out. At last he saw a fox among the dead bodies and pursuing it, even clinging to its tail say some, he was led through a small and winding cleft under the rocks to freedom.
