A portrait of French actress, Elisabeth Félix, better known as Mademoiselle Rachel (1821 – 1858). She was a prominent figure in French society & became the mistress of a number of prominent people including Napoleon III, Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte and Alexandre Colonna-Walewski, the illegitimate son of Napoleon I. Because newspapers attempted to publish pictures of Rachel on her deathbed a political move in France led to the introduction of new privacy laws.
