before Henry w. seeley invented the electric iron in 1182 our ancestors used first smoothing stones from the 8th and 9th centuries and later flat or pressing irons to keep clothes smooth. this red painted specimen now used as a door stop is a wooden handled iron from the 19th century. in use it would be placed on a stove until hot enough to use. this photo is exclusive from a private collection
