Inworking, the burin is held at a sharp angle to the surfaceof the plate (fig. 2). By the pressure of the palm onthe handle of the burin the point is moved forwardsin the direction of the line to be made. If the plate besmall the engraver has it lying on a leather cushion filledwith sand ; if it be large it is fastened on a movable turn-table, so as to turn and twist to meet the stroke of thegraver.
