VIETNAM - The horticultural village of Sa Dec. Located in southern Vietnam in the Mekong Delta region, Sa Dec is known as the birthplace of writer Marguerite Duras. There is her autobiographical novel The Lover, award Goncourt 1984, in which she delivers the story of her first love in the heart of French Indochina. "Garden of Cochin China" is Sa Dec was baptized in the mid-nineteenth century. Bonard, then French governor of Cochin China, saw a land nestled between two main arms of the Mekong and a favorable climate for floriculture. He therefore brought seeds from many species of France. It is six o'clock in the morning when the city comes to life. We start working before the big heat. At sunrise, 300 hectares of chrysanthemums, marigolds, dahlias, hydrangeas, roses, bonsai and others are revealed. At each plot, various smells are interfering with us. We are immersed in the scenery of a film by Hayao Miyazaki. Day after day, trucks and boats queue on the dock to load the more than 12 million flowers and plants that leave each year locally and abroad. Horticulture has continued for a century and a half, and this trade is an important part of the province's economic growth. The city invested in the improvement of quality, the preservation of local flowers and the application of new biological technologies.
