The first idea of the riveting machine is due to Mr. Fairbairn, of Manchester, who, in1838, patented a machine in many respects similar to the common punching machine, but having thegreat lever of such a form as to communicate a horizontal motion to the dies or tool for forming thehead of the rivet. The machine represented is a modification which Mr. Fairbairn has since made,in which he has introduced several improvements, and remedied several defects to which the formerwas
