Experience has proved that a hinged or swingingmovement of the valve is more reliable and its actionmore certain than either the horizontal or verticaltypes with a sliding movement, especially wheretrouble is caused by incrustationfrom limy or impure water. There are no wings or guidesto become incrusted with scale ordeposit while the valve is openand to prevent its closing, andthe liability of damage or delaycaused by the valve sticking orfailing to close is obviated. No matter how efficiently a boiler check is used,there is no question as to the double advantage gainedby the use of a line check valve, and few modernequipped locomotives are now without them.
