Gullet cancer stent. Endoscope view of a metal stent holding open a gullet (oesophagus) affected by a carcinoma (cancer). The cancer has blocked the oesophagus, causing vomiting and difficulty in swallowing. The stent allows the normal passage of food to the stomach. Oesophageal cancer is treated by the removal of the oesophagus, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but the prognosis is poor unless it is detected very early.
