Although placed on a straight piece of track in this case, the best placement for such signals is on the visible bend of a road or river since air search rescue uses curves in roads and waterways as helpers to referencing their airborne location in relation to ground below. These are small examples of signals - in reality they need to be about 6ft square to be seen from above, preferably larger.
