A hose connec-tion should be provided on the roof, the latter detail beingshown later under fire service. In considering fire protection, it is first necessary todetermine whether it is simply to be for the power stationor for buildings in its immediate vicinity. If there are otherbuildings to protect it would be more than possible that theywould be insured, and to secure the best protection and insur-ance rate it probably would be necessary to install an imder-writers fire pump in the power station so connected that itwould be always ready for fire service and so arranged that ailother services taken from the fire main could quickly be shutoft. In this case it is quite probable that the fire pump woulinot be connected to serve as a reserve feed pump, thus re-quiring two feed pumps in addition to the fire pump. f£/f/^0/^/ir£0 l//JT£ff f/^£ ■/^i/NW/)r. Figure 297 (M 1-2). Further to insure the reliability of fire service it wouldbe advisable to install one of the feed pumps so that it couldbe used for fire service if necessary, thus maintaining the firewater supply whenever the regular fire pump is being re-packed or repaired. The regular feed pumps should be of theoutside packed-plunger type, the fire pump of the under-writers type and the second feed pump of the center-packedplimger type, with extremely light rams to permit its beingoperated at the high speed necessary for fire service. Afairly good arrangement is to use one feed pump and twofire pumps of smaller size. The latter plan is, however, ob-jectionable if an open feed-water heater is used, since thehot water from the heater will soon destroy the inside packingof the fire pump, which must be of the piston pattern inorder to operate under the high speed necessary. If thepower station is isolated, little water is required for its pro-tection and
