Had these books reached Europe earlier than they did,we should have learnt to print from the Chinese, instead of having toinvent it for ourselves. 8 The improvement in the making of paper here alluded to consistedin the use of linen rags for the purpose, and a method for pulping thefiber by beating. The first paper-mill in Europe for making paper fromlinen rags was established at Niirnberg in Germany by Ulman Strother asearly as 1390.
