Orchid (Phalenofis), photographed against a brilliant sky, the summer afternoon sun blazing
A photo of a phalentofis orchid, taken against the blazing white sky of a summer afternoon; the plant is being stretched into the air, pot and all, in order to place it against the zenith of the sky which (using a slight amount of over-exposure) frames the blossoms almost formlessly against the light so that what is left is a riot of color with only a dim indication of the actual forms the blossoms have. What is left is incredible beauty defying every explanation except the wonder that comes from seeing it. Of course, the plant is easily explained in terms of its origins, its genus and species but all of this means about as much as what ornithology means to the birds.
