Cro-Magnon fossil skull endocast, being handled by a researcher. This cast of the space inside the skull is used to study the structure of its brain. It has been produced by selective laser sintering (SLS) using data from a 3D scan of the fossil. SLS, an additive manufacturing technique, uses a laser to melt and fuse a polymer powder (white). Removing the unsintered powder reveals the endocast. Cro-Magnons were an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). This endocast was made by the French company Initial. The fossil is from the Musee de l'Homme (Museum of Man), Paris, France. Photographed in 2010.
