A short boat ride from Aswan takes you to this Nubian village Island overlooking the First Cataract. Island famous for its remarkable inscriptions dating from the Middle Kingdom to Ptolemaic times. Over 250 Inscriptions on weathered granite rock recording Egyptian carvings are prayers of gratitude to local Gods for safe return from the southern Land of Punt and deepest Africa. The Famine Stele tells how Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty placated the god of the cataract, Khnum by building a new temple on Sehel. Recorded in Ptolemaic times.
