Republic Day is one of the most important public holidays celebrated in Turkey and in Northern Cyprus, and it commemorates the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on 29th October 1923. On the same day, which marked the official dissolution of the Ottoman empire, Mustafa Kemal was elected as the first president of the Republic.
