Tlie Eomans used strainers filledwith snow to cool their wines, and such may have been thedestination of the one here represented. These were calledcola vinaria, or nivaria. The poor used a linen cloth for thesame purpose.* With respect to the details of dress, the excavations, whetherat Pompeii or Herculaneum, enable us to clear up no difficul-ties, and to add little to that which is already known on thissubject.
