Southern Peru copper corporation Smelter on the Pacific coast at Ilo in Peru 1972


This smelter plant at Ilo Peru on the shore of the Pacific Ocean refines all the blister copper mined from Cuajone the largest copper producer in the owners are Southern Peru copper Corporation who have been operating mines in Peru for over fifty years. This refinery attracts a lot of critisism by environmental groups concerning toxic emmisions from the plant and fears of people living in the town of Ilo and those further inland living and growing crops along the fertile valley's of Moquegua,Tambo and Majes.(Details revised and added 2006)
