The apparatus is seen at work in Fig. 12. Thisdevice works upon a principle which has long been util- H 12. The seed-tester (No. ii) set up. ized in the testing of seeds—the capillary power of earth-enware and variousspecies of roclc—andthere are many appli-cations of the idea inpractice. These seed-testers may be placedin an incubator orother heating device,or they may be usedin the greenhouse ora living-room. A recent bulletin (No. 35) of the Rhode Island Experi-ment Station describes and illustrates a modification ofthe absorbing-block idea. Instead of a slab of stone orearthenware, sprouting cups are used. These weremade for this statiom out of porous clay by A. H. Hews& Co., of North Cambridge, Mass., the pattern beingmuch like that used at the Seed Control Station at Zurich,Switzerland. They are 3 inches in diameter and \% inches high, includingthe cover, which is ven-tilated, as shown in The bottom is solidand >^-inch thick. Eachcup is placed in a glass,3. sprouting cup. ^jj^j, ;„ ^^5^,1^ ^ constant supply of water is kept. These cups are placed in asprouting
