Ventrally, the medial edge of the crest is thickened, and thedorsal edge remains narrow. The downturned sacral ribs and prominent supra-acetabularcrest combine to present a ventrolaterally directed acetabular socket. The medial surface of the ilium bears the large, shallow, and sculptured depression thatreceives the head of the first sacral rib. The depression for the second sacral rib is smallerand extends for a short distance on to the anteroventral part of the base of the iliac two depressions, separated by a low, vertical ridge, closely match the lateral surfacesof the two sacral ribs. 62 ANNALS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM. This is much larger than the corresponding surface on the ilium and the excess formsa rugose anteroventral acetabular border. The head of the pubis remains roughened andraised in front of the anterior margin of the acetabulum, and this probably represents thesite of the m. ambiens origin. The remainder of the pubis is composed of two confluent and flattened plates of projects medially, in a horizontal plane from the head of the pubis, and the other isoriented almost at a right angle to the first to form the short, downturned part of the oval-shaped obturator foramen is positioned close to the posterior edge and just medialto the head of the pubis
