Thermometer 40 was located on the steel part of the tun- nel, thermometer 39 about 3 feet above the plank covered part of the tunnel, and thermometer 41 the same height as the top of the tunnel but halfway out toward the side of the ship. Thermometer 40 indi- cated a rapid increase in temperature during the first week after the vessel sailed, and registered 95° F. on March 10. The tem- perature decreased to 86°
