The road sign for the village of Bergen in Germany. Only a few miles from this tranquil and picturesque place was Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where 50,000 people died. The camp's position in the west of Germany meant that thousands of people were sent there as the east fell. 18000 people died in March 1945 alone, and 10000 died in the two weeks after liberation. They died of disease and neglect rather than the systematic abuse seen elsewhere.
