Put your head through the hole in the picture and have a photo taken. Seaside photo board on the promenade in Swanage. Dorset, England, United Kingdom.
The wording on this hand painted illustrated board reads “Guess who’s in Swanage”. Well, in the middle of winter the answer to that question would be, hardly anyone. For more than a century, on any promenade, boardwalk or pier, in any seaside resort you would see a painted wooden board, featuring colourful and amusing life size characters with holes where the heads should be. The visitors would playfully insert their heads into the cartoon scene and have their photos taken. But what is it called? This simple contribution to popular culture has been attributed to the American artist and caricaturist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (1844-1934), and he named it the comic foreground or photo-caricature.
