Ovarian follicle. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovary, showing a tertiary follicle at the start of the antrum phase. The ovary is the reproductive structure that produces the female sex cells (ova). Tertiary follicles are a late (nearly mature) stage of follicular development, part of a process called folliculogenesis that parallels the development of the female sex cells, resulting in ovulation and the release of an ovum from the mature follicle. Magnification: x29 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
