Caption: Jaipur, Rajasthan, India - Apr 2003. Guards of the Jaipur City Palace take a rest from the 40 degrees Celsius outside. A myriad of different buildings constructed over several hundred years of monarchial rule, the Jaipur City palace is a sprawling rabbit warren and a museum. Princes once renowned for their extravagant pomp and spending, once dethroned and stripped of land, were allowed to keep their palaces. Deprived of the taxes they collected from farmers and villagers, they had to convert their stately homes into tourist ventures such as museums and hotels to avoid bankruptcy.
