The public buildings are very imposing, the shopsmagnificent, the streets wide and well paved and always 147 EIGHT JOURNEYS ABROAD crowded with people, while the great number of officers in thestreets gives it an attractive appearance. The funniest sightwas to see mother and me in a drostky. I think I have de-scribed them to you before. They drive them at headlongspeed and when they dash round the corners it is somethingfrightful. The seats are none too large for one, so peoplealways ride with their arms around each others waists. Atfirst we didnt like them at all, but in a few days we got tobe really fond of EN ROUTE Vienna, Sep. nth, 1870. We left St. Petersburg at noon of the eighth and aftera dreadful ride of thirty hours through very uninterestingcountry we reached Warsaw in Poland where we spent thenight of the loth. We would have liked to see more ofWarsaw—it was such a beautiful looking city, but we wereanxious to get news from home so pushed on to this city, which we reached early this morning. A fifty-four hours rideis beginning to tell on us, and besides we have been out allday shopping, as we have arrived here in a needy state. It isa beautiful city and seems to be very fashionable. We went in to Vesper service at St. Stephens, a mag-nificent Gothic cathedral something like the Milan church inelaborate carving. All the aristocrats live in the old portionof the city, the centre of it, and what was the old wall of thecity is laid out as a garden. Vienna is such a lively, jolly sortof a place we should like to spend several weeks here and enjoyourselves,
