The foot(r, fig, 404, and ) now restssteadily upon theheel and the ballsof the toes; the other foot (l) leaves the ground, so that thewhole weight is borne by one foot, and the plantar arch ofthat foot expands a little, so as to cause a slight lengthening*- ofthe foot under the weight that is laid upon it. Much yieldino-of the arch is, however, prevented by the ligaments that bracethe arch (fig, 400), and by the muscles that are disposed be-neath it. Next, the heel ,(fig. 408) is raised by \ \^the action of the calfmuscle, and the weightof the body is thrownforward over the balls of the toes, while the other foot (l fio-405) is carried onward, and is placed upon the ground readyto receive the weight and commence its carrying work.
