Knives should not beboiled as boiling tends to dull sharp instruments. Sterilizeby placing in a five per cent, solution of carbolic acid for twentyminutes and then transfer to eighty-five per cent, alcohol. Part should have been previously cleansed. Apply tinctureof iodine three per cent. Allow to dry. Then apply alcoholseventy per cent. CLEANLINESS OF THE FEET The first essential in the proper care of the feet, as of thebody, is rigid attention to cleanliness. Where this is neglectedthere accumulates an excessive amount of perspiration, fattymaterial, dirt and skin scales which under the action of bacteria 30 FOOT CARE AND SHOE FITTING decompose causing a very offensive odor and the skin todisintegrate. The individual then suffers from abrasions,bUsters, tender, sweaty and flaccid feet. To maintain a standard of cleanliness and relative freedomfrom foot trouble and disability, inspections should be the barracks this inspection should be made at least everyfortnight. The company commander, accompanied by thesergeant who takes notes if necessary, passes through thebarrack houses inspecting each man as he stands in his barefeet
