The growingindustries of the coast lands such as sugar, coffee, cotton and arrowrootdemanded a surer supply of labour than could be obtained among the nativesof the colony. The importation of these labourers has continued since thatyear ; probably not more than half of them returned to their native land oncompletion of their indentures, the remainder settling in the colony as freeIndians and being employed as market gardeners, servants, etc. 15.
