To a greater extent than any other of our shore birds they have the habit of almost incessantly teetering or bowing whenever they are standing, a habit that causes the country boy to almost universally know them as Tip-ups or Teeter-tails. As usual with all birds of this order, the young are hatched covered with down, and leave the nest and follow their mother about almost as soon asthey emerge from the eggs. WANDERING TATTLER {Heteractitisincanus). This is a slate-gray and whitespecies occurring on the Pacific coast, butnever in any abundance.
