A late 19th century view of Shipquay Place in Derry City, aka Londonderry City, the second-largest city in Northern Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Daire meaning "oak grove". The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, and the photograph shows (left) the City Walls built in 1613–1619 by The Honourable The Irish Society as defences for early 17th century settlers from England and Scotland.
