Bulletproof vest testing, 1920s. Revolver being fired to test a bulletproof vest being worn at left. Bulletproof vests are made of materials designed to absorb the kinetic energy of a bullet and slow the bullet enough to prevent it penetrating the vest. Before the invention of Kevlar in the 1970s, such bulletproof vests mostly consisted of padding and metal plates. Photographed in the USA on 13 September 1923.
