Theupper stories of buildings are made to overhang, carried on rows of heavy corbels, and arches andvaulting- are used as familiar forms. On the leastopportunity a bold gateway is contrived : even adoor in a plain garden wall is thought worthy ofembellishment, and has a heavy arch or moulding,or piece of panelled surface. The narrow streetsare never straight, and often are mere flights ofsteps. They pass under buildings as stone-vaultedpassages entered by medieval - looking climb upon each other, and the flat roofof one sometimes abuts ag-ainst the lowest floorof its neighbour above. The unexpected is neverwanting.
