Much thought has been expended in atlempting todevise some form of gearing of electric railway motorsthat will enable the motor to run continuously and pre-vent the great waste of energy which now takes place instarting a car. The actual horse-power expended instarting a car is not large. While the horizontal effort so much to the cost, weight and complication of themachinery on a car that it has never found favor. Harry E. Dey, of the Dey-Griswold Company, hasattacked the problem with a hydraulic gear. The motoris put in the center of the truck and drives a set ofpumps filled with oil which is piped to fluid motors oneach axle, and so drives the car. The motion of the therefore dependent on the motion of the pumps and it Q_. is great the speed is low and as horse-power is speedmultiplied by horizontal effort the horse-power is object then has been to devise a gear which willallow the motor to run at full speed and make use of allits available horse-power in the process of starting. Theuseful horse-power exerted by an electric motor in start-ing a car is only a small fraction of the energy that is is manifest that when the pumps are operated with avery short stroke (although at constant speed) an immenseeffort can be exerted at a slow car speed as in starting, while for higher speed and less horizontal effort thestroke of the pumps can be increased. The most essen-tial element of the whole arrangement is therefore thevariable-throw crank which connects motors to pumps.
