Sea cucumber. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified sea cucumber (class Holothuroidea). This marine invertebrate is a soft-bodied relative of the starfish. Sea cucumbers live on the sea bottom, sometimes buried in sand or mud, usually remaining motionless with one side of their bodies facing permanently down. They feed on detritus and plankton, catching food with the ring of tentacles which surrounds their mouths. Magnification: x230 at 6x6cm size. x350 at 4x4ins
