View E of Ballowall Barrow, Cornwall, England, UK, a complex Bronze Age round cairn containing burial cists & an entrance grave. Excavated & confusingly reconstructed by Cornish antiquarian W. C. Borlase in 1878-80. The present walls & circular passage between them were created by Borlase to give access to excavated features within the central cairn. He discovered 5 cists along with Bronze Age pottery & burnt bone within the central rubble mound retained by two concentric drystone walls. Two further cists were attached to a stone platform surrounding the mound from which an entrance grave faces SW out to sea. The central mound rose above the surrounding platform cairn. It is uncertain whether the entrance grave was a free-standing Neolithic structure incorported into the outer platform or a late feature in the complicated Bronze Age building sequence. When Borlase first discovered the cairn it was buried beneath a mine tip up to high in places; a chimney from the tin mine is in the rear of the photo.
