Chess problem. 14th-century manuscript copy of a page from a collection of chess problems published in northern France. The manuscript collection is known as 'Bonus Socius' (Good Companion), thought to originally be by Nicholas de Saint-Nicholai, from Lombardy, Italy. The original Italian publication dates from the 13th century. This French edition is in tempera colours and gold leaf on parchment. It forms part of a treatise on chess with 210 drawings and various games. Chess in early medieval Europe had different rules to the modern game.
